The role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Sole Gardener to take ownership of a magnificent 10-acre private historic estate garden in Hertfordshire. This is a hands-on position for a skilled and self-motivated individual who takes genuine pride in their craft. The owner is deeply engaged with the garden, both in its upkeep and in enjoying it. You will work closely with them to maintain and enhance this beautiful setting.

Responsibilities

● All aspects of garden maintenance, including planting, pruning, weeding, and seasonal upkeep across the whole estate

● Keeping a project tracker and to-do lists up to date, and keeping the owner regularly informed of progress

● Operation and maintenance of all equipment, including ride-on and pedestrian mowers, strimmer, chainsaw, and hedge trimmer; operation of a boom lift (full training provided)

● Management of the vegetable patch, orchard, and chicken-keeping duties

● Maintenance of ponds, fountains, and water features

● Light maintenance tasks such as painting gates, fences, and garden structures

● Liaising closely with the owner to understand their vision and priorities for the garden

● Maintain hard paved areas and tennis court using appropriate treatments as required

● Manage compost heaps

● Maintaining client equipment as required and liaising with external suppliers and contractors as required.

What we're looking for

● RHS Level 3 horticultural qualification (essential)

● A minimum of 5 years' experience in a head or sole gardener role

● Experience working within a private estate or high-net-worth property environment, with an appreciation for the discretion and security awareness this requires

● Broad horticultural knowledge across ornamental, kitchen, and productive gardens

● A proactive, self-managing approach with the ability to prioritise effectively across a large, varied estate

● Confident operating machinery and undertaking light practical maintenance tasks

● A genuine passion for horticulture and pride in the presentation of the grounds

● Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, respectful approach when working alongside the owner

● Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year

This role would suit someone who wants to be genuinely involved in managing and shaping a prestigious garden, not just maintaining it. If you take real pride in your craft and are looking for a position where your expertise and initiative will be recognised and valued, we would love to hear from you.
