Job Description – General Estate Worker (Land Dept)

The Fitzwilliam Wentworth Estate is a traditional rural estate of 15,000 acres with a range of agricultural, residential, commercial, forestry and sporting property located between Rotherham and Barnsley and at Bradfield, Sheffield. The Estate has approximately 1,500 acres of mixed woodland including a block of approximately 500 acres of conifer at Bradfield, within the Peak District.

The Estate wishes to engage an additional permanent member of staff to work in a small team to undertake general estate maintenance at Wentworth and occasionally at Bradfield.

To carry out general estate property maintenance including fencing, hedging, chemical spraying, weeding, grass cutting and grounds maintenance. To undertake common forestry operations including felling, extracting, processing, planting, and beating up. To undertake such other tasks as are requested and fall within the realm of the individuals experience and abilities. To be willing to accept additional training.

National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC) Certificate in Chainsaw will be essential along with experience of woodland establishment, maintenance and felling operations. It is essential that you have the ability to work with heavy & awkward handheld and driven machinery. First aid, materials handling, clearing saw and chemical spraying qualifications are desirable. The duties of this post require that applicants hold a full driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK and have access to private transport.

You must be able to undertake your workload taking into consideration safety, location and availability of machinery and tools. You must use your initiative to deal with unexpected problems that may occur when carrying out your duties. You must possess good verbal skills to help communicate with your line manager in a simple and concise manner. You will also be expected to interact with members of the public whilst carrying out your duties and ensure that you provide accurate information in a polite manner. You will be part of a small operational team. It is essential that you are a team player and are able to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to working with others towards the team’s goals. On occasions you may be lone working, when you will need to be highly self-motivated to achieve targets and disciplined in your approach to adhering to health and safety procedures.

The core package includes: Holidays - 23 days annual leave plus public/bank holidays, Salary dependent upon experience and qualifications payable monthly (20th of each month), Overtime- Time and a half. Pension - Entitlement to join group personal pension scheme on 1st April following completion of twenty-four months service.

Normally 7.30 am to 4.30 pm (Friday 3.30 pm) Monday to Friday with 15 minute break each morning, ½ hour for lunch and 15 minute break every afternoon, except Friday. However you will be required to work whatever hours are necessary for the proper performance of your duties. This may include weekends and public holidays and the employer also reserves the right to vary normal hours of work.

You will be on probation for 6 months.

It is essential therefore that you give a full but concise description of the nature, extent and level of the responsibilities you have held. If you are successful, the Estate will carry out enquiries into your age, nationality, health and other matters, to ensure that you are qualified for appointment. To enable these enquiries to be completed, we may require to see your original birth certificate and/or passport, as well as your educational certificates. When the enquiries are completed satisfactorily, the Estate will then make a formal offer of appointment.
