Job Description

Job Title: Underkeeper

Reporting to: Estate Owner and Head Gamekeeper

The owners of Downton Hall, a traditional and beautiful private country Estate, 3 miles outside Ludlow are seeking a highly motivated individual with all round experience to support our Head Gamekeeper on an established and first-class pheasant shoot (circa 30 days), and to be a part of a busy, happy and successful team.

Hours

Full Time Hours: Core Hours, Monday to Friday 40 hours, 8.00am to 5.00pm.

Flexibility required, subject to seasons; Underkeeper’s work flexible hours according to the season and jobs which need completing, based around tasks at different times of the year. The game team usually work on a rota system including early mornings, evenings and weekends, depending on the time of year.

Package

A three-bedroom Cottage with garden and kennels is provided along with a salary dependant on experience.

Main duties & Responsibilities:

§ Regular liaison with the owners and Head Gamekeeper.

§ To be knowledgeable about the countryside and its game and wildlife.

§ Experience in terms of bird rearing and release.

§ A good understanding of animal welfare and health and safety.

§ Physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness and stamina.

§ Good communication skills.

§ To be comfortable working alone for long hours.

§ Support the management of wildlife, landscapes and shooting activities under the direction of the Head Keeper.

§ Working with woods team to ensure effective vermin control.

§ Assisting with Pen maintenance.

§ Carry out general habitat maintenance on the Estate as and when required.

§ Assist in running the beating line on shoot days.

§ To work effectively, courteously and build good relationships with Estate team members and other personnel.

§ To perform other tasks in the department as directed.

§ To bring to the owners’ attention, any issues relating to the Estate.

Requirements

§ At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role.

§ You'll need a driving licence, as well as a shotgun and firearms certificate.

Desirable

§ Any game/pest control or other qualifications relevant to the role.

§ Chainsaw licence.

§ Spraying licence.

§ First Aid at Work certificate.
