Job Overview:

Brook Farm is seeking a dedicated and reliable person for the role of Farm Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the estate. This role combines practical farm and estate work with supervisory responsibilities, including managing a junior farm worker. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, from woodland and land management to the upkeep of farm buildings, machinery and event spaces.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors in a varied role, with scope to grow their skills in farm and estate management within a beautiful rural setting.

Key responsibilities

1. Woodland Management:

• Implement and assist in coordinating and executing of both the woodland management plan and CS higher tier scheme.

• Carry out tree planting, pruning, and monitoring woodland health.

• Support in maintaining rides and paths and clearing of overgrowth [inc. bracken] for access and wildlife preservation.


2. Estate Maintenance:

• Support general maintenance and upkeep of the estate, including fencing, gates, and roads.

• Assist with the management of the estate’s water systems, including ponds, streams, and drainage.

• Carry out regular inspections of the estate’s infrastructure, reporting and addressing maintenance needs.

3. Vermin control

• Carry out vermin control as required under the CS higher tier scheme. Record all data and provide to owners for submission.

• Liaise with surrounding landowners to coordinate vermin control where necessary.


4. Stakeholder Management:

• Communicate and cooperate with local stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, and service providers.

• Ensure the estate complies with all relevant local regulations and environmental standards.

• Support the coordination of estate events and liaise with external groups and businesses as required.


5. Land Maintenance for Wedding Venue:

• Oversee the maintenance of outdoor areas used for wedding and events, ensuring they are presentable and safe.

• Supervise groundskeeping tasks such as mowing, hedge trimming and weeding, ensuring outdoor spaces are pristine.

• Assist with the set-up and breakdown of wedding-related events on the estate when required.

6. Farmyard and Machinery upkeep:

• Ensure the farmyard is safe, clean and well-organised.

• Carry out routine maintenance and inspections of machinery, vehicles and equipment

• Prepare machinery for seasonal use and store tools securely.


7. Building Maintenance:

• Conduct inspections, repairs and seasonal upkeep of farm buildings.

• Ensure facilities remain functional, safe and well-maintained.


8. General Farm Assistance:

• Support seasonal tasks such as establishment and upkeep of stewardship schemes etc.

• Uphold health and safety standards across the estate

• Provide assistance with ad-hoc farm duties as required.


Skills and Qualifications:

• Previous experience in farming, estate work, or a related role.

• Experience or interest in woodland management and countryside conservation is desirable.

• Practical knowledge of machinery maintenance and basic repairs.

• Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all conditions.

• Strong attention to detail and a problem-solving approach.

• Ability to work independently while also managing and supporting a small team.

• Good communication skills for working with contractors, suppliers and external stakeholders.

• Clean driving license

• Qualifications for operating farm machinery [PA1, PA2]; telehandler, chainsaw

Desirable:

• First Aid training


Working Conditions:

• Full-time role, approx. 40 hours per week with some weekend work required for vermin control, events or seasonal activities.

• Outdoor, hands-on role working outdoors in all weather conditions.
