Estate maintenance and Forestry worker

Browsholme is an historic family home of 620 acres in Lancashire. The Estate is situated in open countryside in the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Beauty but only 5 miles from Clitheroe, a thriving market town.

The Estate comprises 420 acres of farmland which is let, 170 acres of commercial forestry and 30 acres of garden/amenity; also nine cottages. Browsholme Hall is open to visitors during the summer and has a popular wedding venue.

We are looking for one general employee who will live in a cottage at Browsholme and be involved in diverse jobs primarily within the woodland and keep on top of estate maintenance. .

Personality and willingness to identify and get on with jobs needing done is essential and training offered where necessary in achieving new skills.

A brief summary of jobs is as follows:

· Work in the woods – felling, processing and extracting trees which will entail use of tractor, timber crane and trailer. Replanting, protecting and aftercare of new trees. Rhododendron removal. NB a contractor will do large scale felling.

· Wood chip – responsibility for storage and conversion of sawlogs for 199 kw biomass boiler. Regular delivery of wood chip and general maintenance of biomass boiler.

· Sawmill – convert timber for firewood and also fencing materials etc from our sawmill.

· internal and external general maintenance of Hall, buildings and cottages where skills allow. This includes working with contractors doing other work on the Estate ranging from plumbers, electricians and painters through to civils, fencing and forestry contractors.

· Maintenance water supply and borehole.

· Fence and ditching repairs.

· Security: if on infrequent occasions the family is away to be responsible for the security of the Hall.

The candidate must be physically fit and prepared to commit absolutely to a new role and become part of a team of our other employees who all have diverse roles on this busy estate.

There is a three-bedroom tied cottage with garden is available to applicants and we would expect the new employee to live there, probably with their family. Part-time cleaning, housekeeping, hospitality or possibly administrative support work might be available for the right candidate’s partner. For those with a young family excellent schools are to be found in Clitheroe and surrounding area.

Applicants must have a driving licence and experience with physical outdoor work. The following skills are essential:

· Driving a tractor, with implements and 4 tonne digger.

· At least one of the skills below.

Otherwise the following skills would be desirable but not necessary.

· Chainsaw ticket

· Any building trade

· Farm fencing and ditching

Salary will be in the region of £28,000 per year and benefits include council tax for cottage, telephone connection, heating and wood for home fires.
