Estate and Farm worker
Clint is a family home and mixed estate near Stenton in rural East Lothian. The house is in a secluded
valley with a large mature garden. We manage a 75ha mixed farm with ~250Ha of hill ground in
hand, as well as commercial and broadleaf forestry. We have recently converted to organic farming.
We are looking for one general employee who will live at Clint and keep on top of all Estate
Activities. This will include work in the garden at Clint House and outside on the farm and in the
woods. Personality and willingness to identify and get on with jobs needing done is more important
than particular experience.
The new employee will work on the following:
• Maintenance in the garden and house – internal and external general maintenance at Clint
House and other Estate properties where skills allow. This includes working with contractors
doing other work on the Estate ranging from plumbers, electricians and painters through to
civils, fencing and forestry contractors.
• lawn mowing and strimming in the summer. Pruning fruit trees; watering; maintenance of
rhododendron collection;
• Fence and dyke repairs, trough maintenance, etc. Occasional tractor work.
• Work in the woods – processing and delivering windblown and thinned trees for firewood
sales and our small bandsaw mill. Delivering firewood very locally once or twice a week in
the winter.
• Moving and checking our small but growing belted Galloway herd and taking responsibility
for calving, etc. Depending on your experience we may also choose to start a small sheep
flock, and possibly keep pigs to help with woodland regeneration.
• Other project work – there is always stuff needing done: understanding the private water
supply, vermin control, occasional picking up for family shoot days, etc. The right person will
be able to look around and see what needs to be done.
The ideal candidate will be physically fit and prepared to commit absolutely to a new role. We hope
to find someone for whom putting down roots and becoming part of the local community is a draw.
There is a three-bedroom tied cottage with large garden available to applicants and we would expect
the new employee to live there, probably with their family. Part-time cleaning, housekeeping or
possibly administrative support work would be available for the right candidate’s partner. You must have a driving licence and experience with physical outdoor work. Experience with one
or more of the following would be desirable but not necessary. Enthusiasm, fitness and ability to
learn are just as important.
• Stock handling
• Any building trade
• Chainsaw tickets
• Fencing and/or dyking
• Gardening – fruit tree pruning, etc.
Whoever joins as our new employee will have a big influence on where the estate goes in the
coming decades. Ideally we’re looking for someone who will be at Clint for many years to come.
Salary will be in the region of £17,000 - £22,000 per year. You will not need to pay any rent or
Council Tax if you live in the tied house.
If you would like to apply please send a covering letter explaining your experience and why you’re
excited about the opportunity to both charlie.blair@cwbenergy.co.uk and zeph.blair@gmail.com
